Andrew Summers Rowan (1857-1943) Papers and Memorabilia

Burial flag, cord, pictures, and correspondence, 1963-1964, concerning disposition of these items. There is a resume of Rowan's life after 1922 and information on his military service, which included a mission in Cuba prior to the Spanish-American War, which was glorified in Elbert Hubbard's A Message to Garcia. There is a resume of Rowan's life, most notably his U.S. Army career, 1881-1909. An 1881 graduate of West Point, he served on the frontier against Indians and on the International Railway Survey in Central and South America before being appointed military attache to Chile, where he co-authored The Island of Cuba in 1897. This book established him as an expert on Cuba, which led to his assignment as a courier to the rebel general Garcia prior to America's war with Spain in 1898. The successful fulfillment of this mission made him famous and, along with gallantry in the subsequent Philippine campaign, was the basis for his being given the Distinguished Service Cross and other rewards.

Many of the papers pertain to the local history of the eastern panhandle. Subjects include the town of Bath (Berkeley Springs); James Rumsey; George Washington; Porte Crayon (David Hunter Strother); Washington Bicentennial; National Flag Day; D.A.R.; and American Indian Day. One of the clippings scrapbooks includes a photo of West Virginia Governor William G. Conley with Key to Bath, West Virginia (ca. 1929-1933), and another scrapbook contains an announcement for a meeting of the "equal suffrage club" on 25 August 1915.

Correspondents include Levi Barber, Daniel Call, Philip Doddridge, Chapman Johnson, Henry Lee, James Pindall, Benjamin Ruggles, Daniel Sheffey and John Tyler, Edgar Campbell Wilson, George Washington Wilson and Thomas Wilson. Subjects dealt with in the collection include banking, cholera, the Cumberland Road, land speculation, pioneer life near Wheeling, West Virginia and in Kentucky and Indiana, formation of and early days in Belmont and Monroe counties, Ohio (including the founding of Woodsfield, Ohio), the Northwest Territory, Indians of North America, family life, marriage and courtship, Virginia militia during peacetime and in the War of 1812, Ohio politics, sale of slaves and the Whiskey Rebellion. There are also letters of members of the Baker and Morgan families of Fauquier County, Virginia and Wheeling, West Virginia which concern life in St. Louis, Missouri during the 1840's.

Photocopies of colonial era treaties made in the Carolinas between the British and Cherokees. The 1756 treaty is between the Catawabas and Cherokees and Virginia to ensure a previous accord at a time of Anglo-French strife in North America. The treaty of 1768 is between the Cherokees and the British Superintendent of the Affairs of the Indian Nations in the Southern District of North America, John Stuart, for the purpose of establishing boundaries between the subjects of both parties. Other items included relate to other land settlements, battle sites, and discrimination of Native Americans. Also includes a list of surnames of mulattoes in Virginia by county compiled by Bureau of Vital Statistics, Richmond. An addendum of 1998/05/19 includes photocopies of maps, photos, prints, and documents (mainly treaties) (1601-1890). Documents include Pennsylvania declaration of war on France (July 5, 1756); treaty of USA and Delawares (date unreadable); and treaty of Virginia and the Six Nations, Lancaster Courthouse (1744). Addendum also includes correspondence with Humbles regarding Cherokees and Native Americans (1994-1996).

Brafferton School quilt

"The Brafferton School" quilt was created by Denise Walters of the Nottoway Tribe of Virginia in May 2022. The quilt was created to commemorate the history of the Brafferton Indian School at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. The school was constructed in 1723 and students from many local Virginia tribes, including the Nottoway, attended the Brafferton before and after the construction of the building. Indigenous tribes were required to pay a tax to the local government but by sending two students to the Brafferton, they were absolved from paying taxes. The quilt is a tribute to all of the Indigenous students who attended the school.
