Two personal diaries of R.E. McCabe of Charleston, West Virginia, containing notes on trips to Europe (1924) and California (1937). On the California trip he briefly describes Kansas City, Boulder, Denver, Santa Fe, Taos, and Los Angeles, muses on real estate values, and notes oil rigs and pipelines. There is a short genealogy of the Hayward family. The diaries also include references to the Ward, Fleming, Brooks, and Watson families. Also includes photographs of members of the Ward, Fleming, Brooks, and Watson families.

Williams, Katherine

Family papers compiled by Katherine Williams of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. Most of the papers are of the James H. Taylor family of Clarksburg, West Virginia dating from the 19th century. There are also records of the Irwin family including a genealogy, and the Civil War letters of private George Irwin, a soldier in Company F, 95th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Other families documented include the Redman and Summers families. The collection includes letters, autograph books, family business records, genealogies, photographs, and other material.

Ballard, Margaret B. (1900-1976)
Papers of Dr. Margaret Byrnside Ballard (1900-1991), regarding the history of Monroe County, West Virginia, and the Ballard family. As a genealogist and author of local history, she was an avid collector of the historical materials contained in this collection, most of which relate to her family and Monroe County. The collection includes personal papers, business records, historical and genealogical research material, scrapbooks, bibles, memorabilia, artifacts, photographs, broadsides, paintings, and postage stamps. Collection contains one disc, which includes a PDF file containing 496 scanned pages of the book Some Descendants of James and Sarah (Ravenscroft) Jones: Including Separate Sections of the Connecting Families of Ravenscroft, Collins, Hickman, Richards and Cain, by Marion Jones Arthur (Mt. Lookout, West Virginia: M.J. Arthur, 1992). James Jones was born in 1762, Charles County, Maryland and died November 10, 1850 in Ritchie County, (West) Virginia. His wife, Sarah (Ravenscroft) Jones, was born March 18, 1776 in what is now Hampshire County, West Virginia, and died in late 1859 or early 1860. Also included on the disc are three JPG image files that show the grave markers of James Jones and George Richards (1759-1835, an Indian spy during the Revolutionary War) in a cemetery in Pennsboro, WV. The latest copyright of the disc is 2007 by David L. Jones. The work was sponsored by Anne Royall Chapter of National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR).

Contains material regarding George Washington and the Washington family, including the order book of the 8th U.S. Regiment stationed at Harper's Ferry, Virginia (1799-1800); typescript regarding Harewood, residence of Washington's brother (undated); New York Times article regarding observation of Washington's birthday (1862); and material regarding the genealogy of the Washington family (1891-1931). Also contains receipt for purchase of slave (1864); genealogy regarding the Forrest family and other families (undated); and a deed for a cemetery plot (1884). Oliver Popenoe, Compiler, Genealogical Material Regarding Popenoe Family, 1911/2010 0.4 Linear Feet Summary: 5 in. (1 document case)

Genealogical material regarding the Popenoe (Papineau, Popino, and other spellings) family and related families (including the Burris, Davis, Dent, Evans, Judy, Martin, Morgan, Prickett, Scott, and Snider families), compiled through the research of Oliver Popenoe. The Poponoe family in North America is traced back to Jean Papineau, a French Huguenot who immigrated to Massachusetts ca. 1700. His son Peter settled in what would later become Monongalia county in the 1770s. This collection includes narratives, family trees, maps, correspondence, research notes, photocopies from books and other publications, transcriptions of original documents, newspaper articles, land surveys, and other material.

Spears, Ralph Edwin, Jr. (1919-2014)

Collection of the Battelle, MacLane, Mendel, and Spears families from southern Ohio and north-central West Virginia (including Wheeling and Morgantown), comprised of genealogy, records, clippings, photographs, artifacts, and more. Collection includes family genealogy and records (Box 1), individual carte de visites, cabinet cards, and assorted family photographs and newspaper article clippings (Box 1-2). Additional photographs include several cased family photographs such as daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and tintypes, mostly of Anna MacLane Battelle, her husband, William G. Battelle, and their son, James (Box 3). Family scrapbooks include personal photographs of Ted Spears and others and related ephemera (Box 4). Photographs of Ted Spears pertain to his college years at WVU and other events. Artifacts include family bibles and a lock of hair (Box 1), children's gloves, eyeglasses, earrings, and a ring (Box 3), and a safe deposit metal lock box (Box 6). A portrait of Ted Spears's great-grandfather, William G. Battelle, is included (Box 5).
