The John A. Washington Family History Collection contains genealogic records of the American descendants of 17th century English emigrants Lawrence and John Washington, founders of one of Virginia's most illustrious families.

Collection contains genealogy of the Poulton Family, published stories, articles, book reviews, books, correspondence with family and friends and news clippings by and relating to John D. Weaver, author, novelist, biographer and West Coast editor of "Travel and Leisure Magazine".

The collection contains handwritten abstracts/summaries of letters dated 1838-1857 held in the University of Virginia. These are mainly written by John Toole to his wife, Mary Jane Suddarth Toole, but also other including his children, George and Jennie Toole, and a friend, Tom Moore. The letters concern Toole's experiences and accomplishments as a traveling portraitist, his children's education, John and Jennie's letters to their mother from the Virginia Military Institute and Petersburg Female College, respectively, and other family matters.

Collection consists of photographs, publications, letters, and newspaper clippings regarding the Jolliff and Watson families. Jolliff family history is highlighted in photocopies of the publication, Family Record and Genealogy of the Jolliff Family, From the Year 1760 to 1878 Inclusive by Oliver P. Jolliff and James S. Watson (1878). A photocopy of the Journal of the Twenty-Sixth Annual Encampment, Department of West Virginia, Grand Army of the Republic, Wheeling, West Virginia, May 19th, 20th and 21st, 1908 (pages 26-28 only) includes a memoir and photograph of James S. Watson. Family obituaries from the 1930s and 1940s from the Morgantown and Fairmont areas comprise most of the photocopied newspaper clippings. Most photographs are unidentified, undated portraits from Morgantown photography studios (Protzman, Rogers, and Morgan) and are most likely portraits of Jolliff and Watson family members. Two identified photographs are of students and teacher(s) from the Uffington, West Virginia Public School House (1907), and a group in front of Watson Rock (named for the Watson family) Monongah, West Virginia (ca. 1900-1910). Other items of interest include a West Virginia University commencement announcement (1937), an invitation to the dedication of the WVU Agricultural Experiment Station (1894), a Fairmont Normal School program (1893), an advertising card titled, Dr. Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge (undated), and a postcard depicting the Balanced Rock near Elkins, West Virginia (1909).

Correspondence, photographs, clippings, scrapbooks, maps, newspapers, and other printed materials of the family of Joseph W. Summers, Morgantown. Included are deeds for Summer land in Preston County, 1831-1903; genealogy notes complied by Mr. Summers on the Barker, Buzzard, Harris, Hoffman (Huffman), Holland, Knapp, Swisher, and Tarleton lines of the Summers family in West Virginia; obituary notices and local history clippings from the Morgantown Post, ca.1930-1956; and several scrapbooks of clippings of verse and political and historical affairs, ca. 1913-1956.

Correspondence, manuscripts, class notes and other papers of Julia McDonald Davis (1900-1993), an author and daughter of lawyer and statesman John W. Davis. Includes correspondence of Julia Davis; manuscripts of her work; her notes; correspondence of John W. Davis; and additional newspaper clippings, postcards, photographs, ephemera, and other material. Subjects of Julia Davis's correspondence and notes include a biographical sketch of E.H. McDonald, Miss Davis's grandfather; business letters; reminiscences of the Civil War; and memoirs of Colonel A.W. McDonald. Subjects of John W. Davis's correspondence include family matters, political and business matters, and information about his trips. Correspondents include John W. Davis, William L. Wilson, and Julia McDonald (probably Julia Davis's mother).
