Papers, 1859-1898, of the McAden and Hicks families of Brunswick County, Va. Includes letters, 1880-1898, accounts and legal documents.

Papers (including business and personal correspondence and accounts) of William H.E. Merritt, of Brunswick and Greensville counties, Va. who was a lawyer, member of the Virginia House of Delegates and editor of the "Richmond Whigquot;and his brothers Dr. Alexander T.B. Merritt of Hicksford, Greensville County,Va. and John F.W. Merritt of Vicksburg, Miss. The collection includes letters, 8 January and 29 March 1857, written by John Minor Botts and accounts of William H.E. Merritt Brother with Cuddy, Brown Co., cotton brokers in New Orleans, La. Subjects covered by the collection include horses, the practice of law, Reconstruction, and slavery.

Accounts, bills and receipts, primarily 1878-1885, of M. M. Tankersley of Fife, Goochland Co., Va. who was apparently a merchant. Also in the collection are accounts, 1893-1910, (including tax receipts for Shenandoah Co., Va.) for Paul C. Orndorff and Early L. Orndorff. Collection is arranged in folders by date.

Correspondence, 1857-1895, of members of the Mongle and Hughes families of Holston, Washington County, Va. and Evergreen, Tenn. Among the correspondents are J.J. Hughes, his sons William A. Hughes and Oliver F. Hughes and his daughter Sarah A. Hughes Mongle; and Samuel A. Mongle and James Mongle of Abingdon, Va. Includes papers, 1874-1884, concerning the registration of voters in Washington County, Va.; and accounts, 1832-1916, of Hughes Co., Mongle Hughes and J.B. Mongle Sons, merchants of Abingdon, Va. Also contains correspondence and papers concerning the Civil War; including an order, 10 Aug. 1861, requesting that J. B. Mongle and others patrol the 'Negro' quarters to prevent 'unlawful assembling of slaves.' (Fd 9) Also includes seventeen memorandum books.

This collection consists of the Civil War papers of Nathaniel C. Wilson (VMI Class of 1861) and papers of other Wilson family members, including:

• Wilson's diary-account book fragment that includes entries from Pennsylvania and the battlefield at Gettysburg.
• Two letters (dated 1859-1860)written while Wilson was a student at the University of Virginia.
• One letter (dated March 14-25, 1863) from Wilson written during the Civil War from Camp near Greenville, Virginia.
• Wilson family correspondence, legal/financial papers, and ephemera.

Includes correspondence (112 pieces), 1890-1915, of Oscar N. Early, farmer of Albemarle and Prince William counties, Va. Includes letters from his wife Mary Brown Early and his brother, Everett E. Early. Also includes printed circular letters, sheets and cards as well as accounts. Includes letter, 25 February 1914, concerning the estate of William Jennings of Acton, England.

Papers, 1727-1918, chiefly 1781-1875, of members of the related Overton, Ragland, Claybrooke and Hart families of Louisa County, Va. and Haywood Co., Tenn. The early papers are primarily legal documents, accounts and account books of John Ragland and Samuel Ragland and correspondence of the children of Samuel Ragland. After 1797, the collection concerns the legal and business papers of Samuel Overton, Thomas Overton, Waller Overton and Sally Overton Claybrooke. After 1810, the collection concerns the Claybrooke family in Tennessee.

Papers, 1829-1905, of Patrick H. Jones of Louisa County, Va. Chiefly accounts of Jones, both personal and related to his partnership with Elisha Melton. Includes account book for a bar operated by Jones in 1852-1853 and contracts between Jones and Melton to lease the bar, lease for woodland and contract with railroad to sell wood. Collection also includes agreements to hire slaves.

Papers, 1840-1906, of Peter W. Ferrell of Danville, Virginia. Includes correspondence, 1860-1873, concerning family news, debts, and the shipping of staves. Correspondents include his brother James O. Ferrell, a teacher at the Kentucky Military Institute, Farmdale, Kentucky.; his brother-in-law John M. Sutherlin of New Orleans, Louisiana; and various companies in Halifax County, Virginia.

Papers, 1812-1915, of the Riddle family of Chambersburg, Pa., Baltimore, Md., and Charlestown, W. Va. Chiefly the correspondence and accounts of Horace R. Riddle, banker of Baltimore, Md. and Charles Town, W. Va. who was the agent for the receiver of the Bank of the Valley in Virginia. Collection also includes a farm account book, 1812-1832, of James Riddle of Chambersburg; and plans and specifications for re-modeling a house in Charles Town.
