"11033 is the artist's meditation on the feelings and experiences of Mary Morst, a black woman in the Virginia State Penitentiary in 1921. Imprisoned behind the black bars of the book's cover, 11033 centers Mary's complex life and shares her story as an imprisoned murderer and the mother of twin children born 'behind bars.' This sculptural artist's book incorporates embedded copies of archival documents, including newspaper clippings, letters, and pardon applications alongside a fictional text woven poetically throughout the historical narrative. The inspiration for this project grew from IBe' Crawley's research into the untold stories of women and girls impacted by oppressive Virginia laws and continued enslavement. Unlike most black women and girls, Mary Morst's story is recorded because of her relationship to the penal system. Cornelius Eady, Marilyn Nelson, Kwame Dawes, Elizabeth Alexander, and Toi Derricotte each read their poetry as part of this event. Keynote Speech and Poetry Reading 1 at the 2004 Furious Flower Conference. Houston A. Baker Jr. gave his keynote speech entitled, "The Poetry of Impulse: Six Inches of African Stone and Lyrical Black Consciousness" after an introduction by Trudier Harris. The session continued a presentation of the Furious Flower Lifetime Achievement Award to Houston A. Baker Jr. by Jerry W. Ward Jr. and Joanne Gabbin. Susan Facknitz introduced the next segment, a poetry reading with Jabari Asim, Major Jackson, Tony Medina, Opal Moore, Sharan Strange, and Yusef Komunyakaa. The Keynote Speech and Poetry Reading 1 was held at Wilson Hall Auditorium, James Madison University on Friday, September 23, 1994 at 1:15 p.m.

Ethelbert Miller, Haki Madhubuti, Lucille Clifton, and Nikki Giovanni. Kalamu ya Salaam introduced the poets at the beginning of the session. The Poetry Reading was held in Wilson Hall Auditorium at James Madison University on Thursday, September 23, 2004 at 8 p.m.
