This collection contains the papers of Albert L. Sturm, professor of political science at Virginia Tech and a noted expert on state constitutions and constitutional revision. Included are correspondence, reports, and printed materials relating to academic instruction, administration, and consultation; Sturm's books, articles, and public addresses; and topical files on politics and constitutionalnoal development and revision.

Papers of Alfred C. Payne (1916-2003), assistant to the dean of students and counselor for religious affairs at Virginia Tech from 1964 to 1981. Included are personal papers (biographical files, correspondence, and photographs); public addresses and writings; and subject files, all relating to Payne's work and personal interests.

The Ann A. Hertzler Collection contains biographical information, publications, project and subject files, and artifacts relating to Hertzler's professional career at the University of Missouri-Columbia (1974-1980) and Virginia Tech (1980-2001). Particular areas of emphasis are children's health and nutrition, food and food programs, and Extension publications from both colleges.

The collection consists of papers concerning Eastman's work as Virginia Tech's Faculty Publishing Officer, her work as Head of the Steering Committee for the Virginia Governor's Conference on Library and Information Services in 1991, and information on funding and support for libraries in Virginia. Materials in the collection date from 1978 to 1991.

The Black Women at Virginia Tech Oral History Project was a multi-phase research and educational collaborative program of the Virginia Tech University Libraries and the Women's Center at Virginia Tech. The collection includes audiocassette tapes, DAT tapes, floppy disks, background and biographical information, and transcripts of interviews with some of the first Black female students and employees at Virginia Tech. The interviews focus on the entry experience of the individual into the Virginia Tech community and the interviewees' perceptions of the climate and attitudes within the university community, particularly as pertains to race and gender.

The Books That Made the Difference Project Collection consists of subject files, clippings, correspondence, manuscript drafts, and audio-visual materials. The project was conceived in l980 by Ann Heidbreder Eastman, formerly of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and executed by Gordon A. Sabine, formerly a professor at this university, and his wife Patricia, who interviewed people across the country, asking what book made the greatest difference in their lives, and what was that difference. The responses were collected for a book, Books That Made the Difference: What People Told Us, published by Shoe String Press in 1983. The theme of "Books Make a Difference" has been, and still is, used by public libraries for public relations campaigns. Noteworthy aspects of the collection include the 1983 book and the 1985 abridged version published by the Book-of-the-Month Club, and the original cassette tapes used by the Sabines to record the interviews.

The collection includes budget and renewal reports for the Composite Materials Research and Education Program at Virginia Tech, for which Carl T. Herakovich served as the co-director from 1974 to 1984. The collection also contains similar proposals for several other similar ventures.

This collection contains the papers of Carol Montgomery Newman, Jr., a graduate of Virginia Tech (BS in biology, 1931), writer and editor for The New Yorker (1949-1972), and Virginia Tech Department of English faculty member (1934-1949, 1972-1975). Includes correspondence relating to The New Yorker, including letters and notes from Charles Addams, Louis Auchincloss, S.J. Perelman, J. D. Salinger, and William Shawn; other materials relating to the magazine, including a manuscript poem by John Updike, drawings by Frank Modell, and newspaper clippings relating to various staff members; a selection of Newman's writings; correspondence relating to Virginia Tech; and materials relating to Virginia Tech's 1931 commencement.

Papers of city planner C. David Loeks (1923-2006), St. Paul city planning director; Twin Cities Metropolitan Planning Commission executive director; Mid-Hudson Pattern for Progress chief executive officer; Hudson Basin Project executive director; and Virginia Tech professor of urban and regional planning, consisting largely of reports and background materials generated by Loeks' work on various planning projects.
