Canaan Valley Alliance
The correspondence, newsletters, photographs and brochures with related news clippings and government publications of a non-profit conservation organization, the Canaan Valley Alliance, formed to oppose the Allegheny Power Company's proposed Davis Power Project. The Project would have built a dam and created a lake in Canaan Valley displacing its original wetlands. The records document the mobilization of an effective campaign on an ecological issue. The Alliance, together with other environmental organizations, such as the Sierra Club, successfully opposed dam construction in the Canaan Valley.

Diary and photographs of Willard C. Westfall of Little Otter, West Virginia, who served with the Civilian Conservation Corps at Camp P-57 at Rupert, West Virginia. The journal begins with his training at Fort Knox and ends with his discharge from the Corps; it details day to day life in the camp. Also included is a songbook, "Standard Songs, Old and New", which was used in camp.

A scrapbook of the Civilian Conservation Corps - Soil Conservation Service kept by Ivan C. Owens, an agriculture extension agent and a soil erosion expert who became a soil conservation officer in charge of control projects. He headed area, district and state conservation offices for the U. S. Department of Agriculture in West Virginia. It contains clippings about the voluntary establishment by election of soil conservation districts formed by in-state farmers. Also there are clippings about the Civilian Conservation Corps and their camps located in the state and about the soil erosion abatement and reforestation projects of the CCC in West Virginia.

The correspondence, scrapbooks, articles and speeches of the collection document the later portion of the life of Daniel Hale (1912-1975), a Princeton physician and conservationist, who was a creator of the board of the Southern Soil Conservation District, and a founder of the Mountain Resource Conservation and Development Area. Correspondents include Robert C. Byrd, James Kee, Arch A. Moore, Jr., and Jennings Randolph.

Air Force Captain Harvey Bowman served in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a member of the 43rd Bombardment Group and on General Douglas MacArthur's staff. One oversize scrapbook chiefly documents Bowman's military service in New Guinea and Australia from 1942 to 1945. This fragile volume consists of loose pages with photographs, orders and regulations, newspaper clippings, and other miscellaneous material tipped in. Photographs depict Bowman's unit and his surroundings in Australia and New Guinea, including both military subjects and the local people and geography. Also includes issues of several different GI newsletters; a 1944 issue of Yank magazine, a 1942 Pacific Islands Yearbook, and a 1929 dance program.

Prominent topics dealt with are crime, federal aid, locks and dams, mental health and pollution. There is correspondence with: Health, Education and Welfare, Housing and Urban Development, Office of Economic Opportunity of the United States government; the Democratic party on the county and national level; the National Governors Conference and with 49 states.

The papers concern working conditions in Union Carbide Corporation chemical plants, vinyl chloride health hazards for chemical plant employees in South Charleston, and the history of Local 598.

Jay H. Cravens, Compiler, Report Regarding Monongahela National Forest Timber Management, 1975 0.01 Linear Feet Summary: 1/4 in. (1 folder)

A photocopy of "The Monongahela Decision," a report compiled by Jay H. Cravens regarding the timber management practices of the Monongahela National Forest and the effect of those practices on the health of the forest. Cravens was the current Regional Forester. This material was compiled in the wake of the "Monongahela Decision" court case. The court found that current timber practices were in violation of the law and therefore restricted planned timbering of the forest.

This collection also includes material documenting Dr. Gregg's involvement with the Sierra Club, including two yard signs protesting the creation of the proposed Potomac-Appalachian Transmission Highline.
