Papers of John J. Davis, a lawyer and politician from Clarksburg, West Virginia. This collection contains correspondence, account books, photographs, essays, speeches, and other material. Also included in this collection are writings of Davis' granddaughter, Julia McDonald Davis. There are also artifacts, including a school slate and three leather billfolds. Correspondence, mainly concerning family news and business. There is comment on prohibition, President Woodrow Wilson's reelection, World War I speculation, the Food Administration under Herbert Hoover, and the influenza outbreak of 1919-1920.

Two scrapbooks kept by Congressman John M. Wolverton's Washington office, documenting his activities as West Virginia's 3rd Congressional District Representative in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1925-30. Subjects covered include the Republican Party and Congressional elections.

Correspondence, legal papers, photographs, and printed materials of John W. Mason (1842-1917). Mason was a circuit court and state Supreme Court judge, member of the Virginia State Debt Commission, and commissioner of Internal Revenue. The general correspondence contains personal and business letters, as well as manuscript speeches, notebooks, and reports. The period while Mason was circuit judge is particularly sparse. Also includes Internal Revenue correspondence consisting of about 8,500 pages in letter press copy books. Roughly half of the collection is devoted to his legal papers and printed materials concerning law in general. Subjects include early development of the Republican Party in West Virginia; political campaigns in West Virginia from 1870-1916; Monongalia Academy; industrial development; Internal Revenue Service (1889-1893); the Virginia Debt question; early banking development in Grafton; and the development of coal companies, particularly around Fairmont. Correspondents include Arthur I. Boreman, A.W. Campbell, Stephen B. Elkins, Benjamin Harrison, Francis H. Pierpont, and others.

Correspondence and writings of the mayor of Jane Lew and one-time Republican nominee for Congress, pertaining to fluoridation, United Nations, foreign aid, income tax, socialism, the Revised Standard Version of the Bible, and Lightburn's conservative interpretation of Americanism.

Correspondence and other papers of Kemble White, one-time law partner of A.B. Fleming, specialist in oil and gas law, counsel for the West Virginia subsidiaries of Standard Oil (Hope Natural Gas, South Penn Oil, and Eureka Pipeline), charter member of the West Virginia Oil and Natural Gas Association, veteran of the Spanish-American War, one-time president of the West Virginia Bar Association; and the West Virginia University Alumni Association. Additional items include: White's notebooks from language and accounting classes taken at the University; correspondence dealing with Mrs. White's gardening activities; drafts of White's proposals for constitutional revision in West Virginia; a Spanish-American War Muster-roll for Company M, 2nd West Virginia Volunteers; and two diaries (ca.1868). Subjects include: oil, land titles and leases; Fairmont Coal and Coke Company; Twin Mountain Orchards; Monongahela Valley Traction Company; Twin Mountain and Potomac Railroad; West Virginia political campaigns; and constitutional revision in West Virginia. Transcription of an oral history interview by Niel M. Johnson of the Harry S. Truman Library with Ken Hechler. Hechler, born 1914 in Roslyn, NY, received A.B., Swarthmore 1935; M.A., Columbia 1936; Ph.D., Columbia 1940 in Political Science which he later taught at Columbia, Princeton, and Marshall Universities. He served as a U. S. Army combat historian in Europe during World War II. Hechler was a research assistant to President Franklin D. Roosevelt and was special assistant to President Harry S. Truman. He was elected to the U. S. House of Representatives as a Democrat from the Fourth Congressional District of West Virginia, 1958-77. A major part of the interview is about his work for President Truman as a speechwriter in political campaigns dealing with issues of public concern in the immediate post-war years such as the Korean War and political corruption. After completion of his White House duties he relocated to Huntington where as a professor at Marshall he staged a successful campaign for U. S. Congress. He mentions, as a congressman, his independence from his own party's state machine and his promotion of controversial causes such as implementation of civil rights and environmental protection legislation. Hechler is a popular, progressive who used a personal contact "grassroots" approach to campaigning. Eschewing the increasing costs of political campaigns and the heavy dependence of candidates on public relations firms, he was defeated in the late 1970's in his gubernatorial and congressional bids. He was successful, though in making a comeback in the 1984 race for West Virginia Secretary of State. He ends the interview by specifying the duties of this office and his accomplishments in it to date. Significant references are made to Dean Acheson, David Bell, Robert C.
