Papers from Dr. John Renton, who was an Emeritus Professor of Geology at West Virginia University. This collection includes a variety of materials, such as maps, illustrations, transparencies, essays, and articles, all pertaining to his work in the geology department. A wide range of topics are covered, and the level spans from basic, introductory geological concepts to academic research. Renton also created regionally specific resources, such as lessons on Appalachian and West Virginian geology (Series 1 and 2). This collection is arranged into two series. The first series consists of educational resources Renton created to be used by West Virginian K-12 Earth Science teachers, and in his own instructive undertakings. The second series contains other materials created and collected by Renton over the course of his career, such as unpublished educational and research manuscripts; published academic articles; and various lessons and field trip guides.

Papers of Hu Maxwell (1860-1927), historian, editor, and author of several county histories of West Virginia, along with papers and records of other family members. There are manuscripts of fiction, verse, and local history written by Maxwell, as well as a number of his manuscripts and publications dealing with forestry which were prepared while he was a member of the Forest Service of the United States Department of Agriculture. Maxwell kept a diary during the years 1901-1919 while residing in Morgantown, Chicago, Illinois, and Washington, D.C., which is extensive for the period of World War I and which contains notes on the diary of Rufus Maxwell (1855-1907). A history of the schools of Aurora, Preston Co. from their founding by early settlers of German descent to the present efforts to reconstruct the recently fire destroyed building. Mentioned are changes in location, types of schools, school principals, funding and various costs such as those for construction. Some early funding, especially to aid poor children, was raised locally by money accumulated in a literary fund. In the nineteenth century other funds were acquired from the Peabody Educational Fund, a national fund created by George Peabody to assist needy public schools. Early settlers mentioned in the establishment of schools are John Stough, Christian Whitehair, Jacob Ridenour, Abraham Wotring and Peter Heckart. Those influential in education after the pioneer era are Franklin V. N. Painter, C. M. Malcom, the Stemple family, Frank J. Pyles, Glenn Wright and Kenneth Parsons.
