Jolliff Family

Collection consists of photographs, publications, letters, and newspaper clippings regarding the Jolliff and Watson families. Jolliff family history is highlighted in photocopies of the publication, Family Record and Genealogy of the Jolliff Family, From the Year 1760 to 1878 Inclusive by Oliver P. Jolliff and James S. Watson (1878). A photocopy of the Journal of the Twenty-Sixth Annual Encampment, Department of West Virginia, Grand Army of the Republic, Wheeling, West Virginia, May 19th, 20th and 21st, 1908 (pages 26-28 only) includes a memoir and photograph of James S. Watson. Family obituaries from the 1930s and 1940s from the Morgantown and Fairmont areas comprise most of the photocopied newspaper clippings. Most photographs are unidentified, undated portraits from Morgantown photography studios (Protzman, Rogers, and Morgan) and are most likely portraits of Jolliff and Watson family members. Two identified photographs are of students and teacher(s) from the Uffington, West Virginia Public School House (1907), and a group in front of Watson Rock (named for the Watson family) Monongah, West Virginia (ca. 1900-1910). Other items of interest include a West Virginia University commencement announcement (1937), an invitation to the dedication of the WVU Agricultural Experiment Station (1894), a Fairmont Normal School program (1893), an advertising card titled, Dr. Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge (undated), and a postcard depicting the Balanced Rock near Elkins, West Virginia (1909).

Collins, Justus, 1857-1934

Justus Collins [1857-1934] was an entrepreneur who opened his first coal mine in the Pocahontas- Flat Top coal field of Southern West Virginia, and thereafter operated mines in the New River, Tug River, and Winding Gulf coal fields. He headed a coal sales agency, speculated in coal and timber lands, headed a cement company, and was interested financially in rubber, oil, and gas companies. He played an important role in organizing the Tug River Coal Operators Association, the Winding Gulf Operators' Association, and the Smokeless Coal Operators Association of West Virginia.

Nuce, Lawrence, 1913-2006
Books, periodicals, films, photos, and other papers relating to World War II, United States Army Intelligence, Nazi propaganda, and the post-war denazification program in Germany. Some of the material is in German. Lawrence Nuce, a Kingwood, West Virginia, native was a combat sergeant during the war. During the occupation, he was a commissioned officer in charge of supervising schools in Bavaria. Includes war newspapers, army manuals, occupation and education reports, and other material. Letter from Charles S. White to Philip Showalter Hench, 1942 1 page Box 39, Folder 6

White informs Hench that he knew Reed and Carroll well and was the anesthetist for Reed's last operation. He believes Carroll's mosquito bite was accidental, not experimental. White encloses a manuscript characterizing the two men and describing Reed's operation.

Kellogg sends Hench a proof of a Cornwell painting of McDowell, and tells him of a forthcoming Wyeth booklet that will present and describe all four Cornwell paintings, including "The Conquerors of Yellow Fever."

Wood comments on Kelly's implication that Reed had difficulty getting Army approval to go to Johns Hopkins. She has been told that a medical officer in the Navy is also writing about Reed.

Hoffmann requests copies of the Cornwell painting to distribute to tropical disease specialists. He describes his years of yellow fever research and comments on the dangers of epidemic that still exist.

Manuscript fragment:My Date with Walter Reed and Yellow Jack, by John J. Moran, 1940/1960 Box 60, Folder 13

This partial manuscript of Moran's autobiography describes his early life, military career, service as a sanitary inspector under Gorgas in Panama, marriage, and business ventures. He discusses his relationship with Hench and their search for the actual site of Camp Lazear, as well as the difficulties stemming from the Reed-Finlay controversy. The section of the draft covering the yellow fever experiments is missing.

County and circuit clerks records, arranged chronologically. Records for the years 1835-1857, include bonds of ministers, tavern operators, ordinaries, ferries, and county officials; estate settlements; records pertaining to road, bridge, and public building; records of the overseer of the poor; school commissioners' and surveyors' appointments; and lists of county officials. Records for 1863-1874 include county supervisors' records; records of the Fairmont and Wheeling Turnpike; and muster certificates and reenlistment and bounty lists for the First, Second, Sixth, Seventh, Tenth, Fifteenth, Seventeenth, and Eighteenth West Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiments, the First, Third, Fifth, Sixth West Virginia Cavalry, the First Light Artillery Regiment, and the Forty-fifth Regiment, United States Colored Troops. Papers for 1867-1907 include justice of the peace records, United States Admiralty Court records, and road surveyors' statements.
