Description:
The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) houses one of the largest and most significant collections of rare and unique materials of any educational institution of comparable size in the United States. Focused on Virginia history but with nationally and internationally important collections, the Manuscripts Collection includes letters, diaries, journals, scrapbooks, business records, organizational minutes, and other items that provide evidence of events great and small and the daily lives of Americans of all backgrounds. The Rare Books Collection, with volumes dating from the 15th century to the present, is strong in dogs, Virginia-related items, early Virginia family libraries, gardening and natural history, religion, book arts, printing history, travel, science, and medicine. The University Archives documents the history of William & Mary from 1693 to the present, including a wide range of materials from administrative records, student organization records, and alumni papers to photographs, audio-visual materials, and artifacts.

This collection includes correspondence, remarks at events such as commencements and award dinners by Professor David Holmes, material related to the Bishop James Madison Society, a draft of a paper related to the 1970s-early 1980s stadium expansion controversy at William and Mary, and projects by students of College of William and Mary Professor David Holmes. Acc. 2011.370: Contains on-site research papers and a videocassette concerning the colonial countryside and Victorian towns and cities completed by students for several courses taught by Professor Holmes. Most of the papers deal with Virginia, but some of the papers also include Maryland, North Carolina, and historic cities such as Philadelphia and Charleston. The videocassette tape is for a project done by a student related to Essex County, Virginia. Also included is an edited manuscript for Dr. Holmes' book "The Faiths of the Founding Fathers," published in 2006.

The collection also contains orientation materials and a program from "EC 1992 and Beyond," a Public Policy conference at William and Mary in September of 1992. T-shirts that belonged to Murray are part of the University Archives Artifact Collection.

The bulk of this collection contains subject files, correspondence, reports, and committee files created and collected by William and Mary Physics Professor Hans Von Baeyer while he was Director of the Virginia Associated Research Campus (VARC) from 1979-1984. Included in this material are: correspondence and reports of Board of Visitors Meetings; reports of the William and Mary Self-Study committee in 1983; and correspondence with various William and Mary offices and departments. The papers also include other professional, administrative, and personal material of von Bayer such as material related to a book, his involvement with Elderhostel, and Physics courses he taught at William and Mary.
