In this letter George Washington writes to Lewis about the rent and value of his various properties along with the slaves that work on those properties, although he writes about his aversion "to sell the over-plus [of negroes] I cannot because I am principled against this kind of traffic in the human species. - To hire them out, is almost as bad, because they could not be disposed of in families to any advantage, and to disperse the families I have an aversion."

Carriage is sent as Mrs. P. requested--expects to see them about 3:00--Mrs. W. has been very ill--sent for Dr. Craik at midnight--"Hers has been a kind of Ague & fever - the latter never entirely, intermitting until now. - I sent for the Doctor to her on Sunday last, but she could not, until he came the second time - yesterday morning - be prevailed upon to take anything to arrest them." On outside of cover Washington has added that since sealing the letter her fever has returned--please inform Mrs. [Eliza P.C.] Law.

Papers, 1783-1862, of the Thomas Smith family of Powhatan County, Va., Kentucky, and Ohio. Includes typescripts of letters, 1841-1842, of James George Smith; typescript of letter, 1862, of Thomas E. Smith; constitution, 1798, of the Emigration Society; and letter, 1799, and address, n.d., of the Humane Society against slavery. The Marie M. and Edith W. Smith Papers are primarily the genealogical charts and notes used to trace ancestral lines to the twenty-five Sureties of the Magna Carta (Barons of Runnymede). The notes are almost all from printed sources. Research covers Huguenot settlers in Virginia and Quaker and Scots-Irish settlers of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The collection also includes genealogical charts and notes compiled by Marie M. Smith and Edith W. Smith.

Gibbons, Hannah M.

Papers, 1793-1890, of sisters and Quaker educators, Mary and Hannah Gibbons. A small number of papers are directly related to their brother, Joseph Gibbons. Correspondence predominantly discusses relatives, friends, travels, and religious sentiments. The second series of items is family and personal papers, consisting of poems, copied scripture, drug prescriptions, and family records. The papers relating to the Infant School established by Mary and Hannah Gibbons make up the third series and include student work, account books, and promotional pieces.

Autograph letter signed. Condolence letter from Mary Stead Pinckney, Shepherdstown, West Virginia, to Martha Washington on the death of George Washington. Pinckney also sends her regards and congratulations to Nelly Parke Custis Lewis, who was recovering from the birth of her first child, Frances Parke Lewis.
