Beavin, Sam Oral History

In this interview, Sam Beavin discusses the culture of music in Williamsburg and how people participate in it. He begins with his background of growing up in Parkland, Florida, and what music is common to that area. He then speaks about his involvement in a student band, Halcyon Lane, and their interactions with other bands on campus. He mentions his influences and genre tastes, and how those compare to the music he plays for Halcyon Lane. He then goes on to describe the locations he has played at, such as the Meridian, the Amphitheater, Sadler Center, Merchants' Square, and on a float during the 2023 Homecoming Parade. He elaborates on the people who listen to him play and how they identify, specifically whether there are students or otherwise. Sam concludes that he is more connected to the William and Mary music community, though enjoys those connections and is content with them. The interview was conducted by undergraduate student Seth Novak on April 7th, 2024, using Zoom H8 Digital Recorders in Earl Gregg Swem Library for the American Studies department Williamsburg Documentary Project.

Working files of David Allen Gauthier, former chair of the Republican Party Committee in Newport News, VA, party leader, and avid civic member. Besides the Republican Party Committee, Gauthier was also an alternate delegate to the 1988 Republican National Convention, and first vice chairman of the 1st District Republican Committee in 1995. Gauthier was also an active member of the Hampton Roads Jaycees, Newport News Economic Opportunity Committee, and the American Production and Inventory Control Society. Most of the papers in this collection surround his involvement with the Republican Party in Newport News and the Hampton Roads Jaycees.

Sternberg, Ethel (Ethel Sternberg)

Two albums containing pictures, brochures, advertisements, and newspaper clippings from Temple Beth El of Williamsburg, Virginia. Founded in 1959, the scrapbooks highlight one of the building renovations that began in 1989. The Synagogue was formerly the Foster Gift shop. In 1968, it was purchased from Colonial Williamsburg, and moved from its foundation on Francis Street to its Jamestown Road location and serves as the temple for the Jewish congregation of Williamsburg. The scrapbooks predominately feature Dr. Paul and Ethel Sternberg, the first president of the congregation and first female president, respectively. Other pictures and articles showcase the congregation, activities, services, and community outreach from the 1980's through early 2000's with some photographs of the temple from the 1970's.
