Harriet Dudley Brown Gray album, 1890/1916

This collection contains a friendship album belonging to Harriet "Hattie" D. Brown Gray (1867-1947) a resident of Massachusetts and Connecticut. The majority of the individuals who wrote an entry were from South Lee, MA or the surrounding towns. After Hattie's marriage in 1894 to Frank S. Gray (1852-1918), and their subsequent move to Connecticut, the majority of writers are from that state. Hattie's husband, Frank, signed the album on their wedding day. On the same page is a note regarding their son's birth, Nov.9th 1895, and Frank's death, Feb. 23, 1918. Her son later made an entry in the journal himself.

The books are nicknamed the Books of Wisdom and ignorance in part because one notebook was titled "Ignorance Book," by Rowley, while the other two books were labeled with the following note, "Aunt Harriet's books of wisdom." These books hold recordings of quotes from famous authors and orators of the late 19th century, and as such they are full of "wisdom" and advice on life.
