Eliza Ellen (Davidson) Johnston commonplace book, 1826/1827

This collection contains a bound volume of manuscript poems written and compiled by Eliza Ellen [Davidson] Johnston. The presentation page is inscribed as folllows " A common place book presented to Eliza Ellen Davidson by her Affectionate Mother on the 4th of June 1826, Greenbrier Virginia." A bound volume of unlined pages divided into two sections, hand-paginated with exception of final 30+ pages. This volume contains many poems written by Davidson, with her name and date at the end of most. Examples include those dedicated to the "orphans" on page 53 and 90, sorrows of young days on page 69, Mother's grave on page 32, Child to his young dead mother page 18. There are also poems from various poets copied from different publications.Tipped in the front of the book is a typed note and handwritten notes. There are theater programs, football items, handwitten sentiments, napkins and other mementos and photogaphs assembled by Ella Schultz, in a suede binding titled, "The Girl Graduate Her Own Book." The album is from Commerce High School in Omaha and Los Angeles Polytechnic High School in Los Angeles. Her move from Omaha to Los Angeles is also documented in the album.

The album contains a color title page, twelve romantic themed color plates throughout the album, over fifty poems and personal notes, and a full-page watercolor of lovers embracing in the moonlit night. Most inscriptions are signed with a first name only or initials; although, there are some exceptions with the writer's full name. Predominately written between 1848 and 1849.

This collection contains a commonplace book written in by Frances Eleanor "Fannie" Poole and her classmates at the Frederick Female Seminary in Maryland. The book includes a frontispiece, engraved title page, and additional plates. Poole wrote "this side up," beneath her inscription, but the binding is upside down. Poole died at the age of nineteen in 1860, four years after the last dated entry in the book. The book has heavy foxing on the plates and pages were torn from the book.

Papers, circa 1810s-1830s, of Gustavus Depp and Elmore Depp of Powhatan and Chesterfield Counties, Virginia. The collection includes two commonplace books and two ledgers. The commonplace books are both collections of different principles and rules of higher mathematics including geometry, trigonometry, calculating interest, among others. The commonplace book belonging to Gustavus Depp focuses much more heavily on geometry than the one owned by Elmore Depp. Both books contain inscriptions on the first page citing the date of acquisition as February 2, 1818. The common book belonging to Gustavus Depp also includes a number of other instances of his name throughout the book including the inscription which reads, "Gustavus Depp commenced going to Jordan Marten to learn mathematick 5th April 1824. Then you may see my hand & name whene I am dead." The end of the volume contains ledgers as well as "A Delicious Apple Pudding" recipe.
