One dark brown memo book, 2.75" x 4", containing George Lindsay's diary from his time at the College of William and Mary and at home in Richmond. At the end of the diary is a list of names and list of expenditures. Lindsay’s activities include going on walks in the evening with friends; attending church every Sunday, either Episcopal or Baptist churches; taking lessons in math and history; attending parties such as Mrs. Tucker's; studying hard; and going on school picnics. His friend Sam is mentioned frequently. A few highlights: July 5: Commencement at the College of William and Mary.July 6: Leaves Williamsburg for his home in Richmond for the summer. While in Richmond, he mentions a lady he loves named Belle. They spend most of the summer together going to town and visiting nearby towns such as Newport News and Hampton. October 9: Returns to Williamsburg to continue with school.

The Gregory Family Papers follow the family of patriarch Virginia Governor John Munford Gregory and wife Amanda Wallace through three generations with letters dating from the 1820’s to the 1920’s. Most items are letters between family members and grant insight into the daily activities and concerns of the Gregory family. The collection also includes correspondence between members of the Gregory family and other acquaintances, including members of the John Tyler family. While most letters are of a personal nature, some also touch on the issues of politics, education, religion, and agriculture. The collection is rich in genealogical information on the Gregory family and related Croshaw, Graves, West, and White families, as well as history of the family’s war involvement. In addition to letters, the collection includes newspaper articles, family documents, and two diaries kept by John M. Gregory’s daughter, Mattie Galbraith, in the late 1870’s. There are also seven cased images of members of the Gregory Family, including Amanda Wallace Gregory, Amanda's sister (Elizabeth Christie Powell), William Wallace Gregory, and Mary "Mollie" Gregory.

This data was gathered by Laura Parrish for her thesis "When Mary Entered with her Brother William: Women Students at the College of William and Mary, 1918-1945" (M. A. Thesis, College of William and Mary, 1988).
