The collection contains correspondence, a poem, and a portrait. The first letter is dated June 2, 1882 and was written by Wharton to James Lyons of the Board of Visitors at the College of William and Mary, pleading with him and the Board to not move the College out of Williamsburg. The second letter is dated August 21, 1888 and was written by Wharton to the Board of Visitors at the College of William and Mary, accepting his appointment as Professor of Languages. The third letter is January 14 [no year] and written by Wharton to Lizzie Tyler at the President's House, describing her as the daughter of "Old Mortality." The poem is called "Jamestown 1900." It was composed by Wharton and "delivered at the celebration of the 193rd anniversary of the landing of the Anglo-Saxons at Jamestown." The portrait is of Wharton as an older man. It is stamped with his signature and was published by Men of Mark Publishing Co. in Washington, DC. It is undated.

Manuscript volumes kept by several generations of the Macon family of New Kent ["Ingleside"] and Hanover ["New Castle"] Counties, Va. including William Hartwell Macon (1759-1843), Doctor William Hartwell Macon (1819-1891) and William Hartwell Macon (1850-1918). The volumes are four ledgers concerning farming and medical practice and a diary. The earliest ledger mentions William Macon (1725-1813).

The papers of Mary Goodwin concern her reaction to Jack E. Morpurgo's "Their Majesties' Royall Colledge". Included is a cover letter from Mary Goodwin to Herbert Ganter, a draft chapter from Morpurgo's book (pp. 241-278) with Goodwin's marginalia, and her separate 27-page critical review of the chapter. The collection also contains five binders of Goodwin's Historical Notes about William and Mary.

Chiefly invitations received by Sally McDowell. Includes printed invitations, 1839, to [George] Washington "Birthnight Ball" held by students at the College of William and Mary; invitation, 1839, to attend a party given at the Bell Tavern; silhouettes, n. d., of Sally McDowell and Dr. [?] McDowell; program, 1851, of entertainment given in London for [Abbott Lawrence]; and account, 1861-1865, of Lilly McDowell.

The collection includes two receipts signed by Mary M. Peachy, one of which was for boarding Hunter, and two additional receipts. There is an essay or oration written by Hunter about "figures of speech," which includes a note from his instructor (whose initials might be LAS or TAS) stating "The entire absence of corrections shows how well Mr. Hunter has performed his task." There is an additional essay or oration, which appears to be incomplete, about Marshal Ney. The same instructor includes a note on this essay, writing "Your performance in itself I should not object to, but it is not a formal oration regularly divided as I intended it to be." The collection also includes a couple of pages of lecture notes, an engraving of "An Accurate Delineation of Readheffers Perpetual Motion," and a letter Hunter wrote home to his father. In it, mentions paying Mrs. Peachy, classes, examinations, "Roane," a student set to marry the daughter of the man with whom he boards.

Notice from the President and faculty of William & Mary, acknowledging Robert Andrews, Jr. as the College's attorney. The notice states that he is to receive, in the name of William & Mary, dividends due as of January 1, 1804. The notice is signed by President Bishop James Madison and professors St. George Tucker (law), Robert Andrews (math), and John Bracken (Grammar School). The Temple Seal is affixed to the document.

The records of the Office of the Bursar are some of the earliest and most comprehensive records of the College of William and Mary from the 18th century surviving to the present day. Of particular note are various references to individuals enslaved by the College as well as to the Brafferton Indian School. The collection includes Bursar's reports, financial statements, statements of rents due to the College, accounts with individuals, lists of tenants, receipts and expenditures, revenues from the exportation of tobacco, duties on skins and furs, bills of lading, as well as indentures of people to the College. The account books reference student accounts, including that of Thomas Jefferson.

This collection, Acc. 1980.121, consists of 1 box of biographical material, photostats and transcripts of correspondence, and discourses, including one on the death of George Washington. Contains a letter, photostats of letters, a photograph of a portrait, and biographical information about John Augustine Smith, President of the College of William & Mary from 1814 to 1826. Includes a letter, 20 December 1815, from John Augustine Smith of Williamsburg, Va., to Richard Bland Lee of Washington, D.C. There are also photostats of letters, 1818-1825, of John Augustine Smith. Finally, there is a photograph of a portrait and biographical material collected by librarians at the College of William & Mary.
