Two large oval portrait photographs, one of Richard Shahan (1841-1906) and the other of his son Harry Shahan (1896-1994), both residents of Preston County, West Virginia. Biographical data regarding both men has been attached to the backs of the photographs, including information regarding their service in the Civil War and World War I respectively. These portraits may be examples of a type of photograph known as a "crayon enlargement", a photographic print that has been enhanced with pastels or airbrushing, giving the image the appearance of a charcoal drawing or color photograph.
