There are 145-pages worth of letters from the Sturtevant family in this collection ranging from 1858-1884. Most of the letters include information about family births and deaths, illnesses and daily happenings. The letters that were written during the American Civil War also contain information on the members of the Sturtevant family in the Union Army. Family members include Ann Maria Sturtevant and Owen Sturtevant. Content Warning: Some letters from the collection include racist language and references to slavery.

This collection contains a price list of bulk items from Sutler's Stores, c. 1861-1865. The list consists of prices from orders made by military units. Sutler stores were located in many army camps throughout the 19th century, mainly durning the American Civil War.

This collection consists of the papers of a Pulaski County, Virginia family, largely consisting of letters received by Rachel Louisa Sutton (later married to David H. Martin) from friends and family during the 1860s. Also contains deeds, family financial records, poetry, photographs and assorted ephemera. A small collection of materials belonging to the Martins' granddaughter, Elinor Mason, completes the collection.

S. V. Bosserman was a cvilian livng in Virginia during the American Civil War. This letter was written by Bosserman and sent to a Miss A. H. Bosserman. Bosserman asks if Miss Bosserman had heard that General "Stonewall" Jackson had been killed, and then goes on from there to write about what was going on in the area where Bosserman was living.

Letter from S. W. Corbin of Virginia, a lieutenant in the Confederate States Navy and prisoner-of-war during the American Civil War, written from Fort Delaware on January 29, 1865, to an unidentified woman (said to have been Emily S. Brune of Baltimore, Maryland), thanking her for Christmas gifts and mentioning several mutual friends in Charlottesville and Richmond, Virginia.
