Harville, John McBride, 1839-1913
The collection contains eight handwritten diaries chronicling John Harville's experiences during the American Civil War. From August of 1861 to January of 1864 Harville served with the 7th Wisconsin Regiment, Company F. He then transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps for the remainder of his term, ending in July 1864. His diaries include details and stories from camp life, largely around Washington, DC, and Baltimore, Maryland. Suffering from chronic "congestion of the lungs," Harville spent Autumn 1862 to Spring 1864 in hospitals. He continued to document this period with stories of daily life, chores, staff and volunteers at the hospitals, and war news.

This collection contains 14 letters from John T. (J. T.) Price to his wife, Frances Price, between 1862-1864, while J. T. Price (1841-1864) was fighting in the American Civil War for the Confederacy. The letters contain information about Price's physical health, his regiment's movements, and everyday living conditions. Ten of the letters are accompanied with transcriptions and photocopies. There are also 5 original envelopes and 1 photocopied envelope, all undated, to Frances Price. There is also a photocopy of biographical information about J. T. Price from North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865: A Roster, Vol. II: Cavalry, compiled by Louis H. Manarin (Raleigh, N. C.: State Department of Archives and History, 1968).

Lancaster, Lucy Lee, 1905-1989
Lucy Lee Lancaster was born in Blacksburg, Virginia in 1905 and lived there until she died in 1989. She was one of the first women admitted to Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute (popularly known as VPI), and after graduating in 1925, she went on to earn her MLS from Columbia University Library School. She worked at the VPI library for the rest of her career. The Lancaster papers contain biographical materials, family papers, genealogy research, correspondence with family, friends, and business contacts, membership materials from local organizations, and travel memorabilia from her numerous national and international trips.

Shackelford, George Green, 1921-2010

The collection includes a paper on the history of Smithfield Plantation, the Preston family, and Virginia Newlee (Col. Robert Newlee's daughter) written by George Shackelford in 1980. In addition, there is an obituary of Colonel Newlee, and a newspaper clipping from 1916 with the muster roll of the Company of Virginia Volunteers in the Mexican War. Also the collection includes a muster roll of Company L, Fourth Virginia Regiment, of which Newlee was captain.
