Subjects include the history of Clarksburg and Shinnston; the Progressive Movement, women's suffrage, and prohibition in West Virginia; West Virginia Wesleyan College; West Virginia Historical Society; Methodism in Harrison County and the state; Methodist missions in Korea, China, India, the Philippines, and the United States; gristmills and covered bridges in West Virginia; America First Day [1922]; Edward Grandison Smith; Parkersburg Branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad; family and personal history; history of the Mason-Dixon Line; the (Clarksburg) 50-Year Club; Nutter Fort Methodist Church; and the Harrison County Fair. Abstract Or Scope
The Hazel Run Baptist Church minute book with the church's covenant, minutes of meetings and lists of newly baptized members, 1856-74. The Hazel Run Baptist Church later became part of the nearby Hopewell Baptist Church, both located in Preston County. The Hopewell Baptist Church ran Sunday School classes (1883-95) of the combined Baptist and Methodist congregations (the Hopewell Union Church Sunday School) and included are class attendance records. The Hopewell Baptist Church records (1906-86) contain articles of faith, minutes of meetings and membership lists. In more recent years their records include detailed budget reports and denominational certificates of merit.

Journal of John Smith, Methodist circuit rider, concerning his work on the Greenbrier Circuit in West Virginia, 1787 and 1788; the Redstone Circuit in western Pennsylvania and western Virginia, 1786-1787; and the Holston Circuit in 1787. Smith preached Calvinist doctrines of unconditional election, reprobation, and perseverance. There is a typescript, "Greenbrier Circuit - Its First Year; 1787-1788," by the Reverend Lawrence Sherwood, based on the Smith journal.

There are also two kindergarten class photos (box 1; 1969, 1972) and a cassette sound recording of "Heritage Sunday" (box 1; 1997).

Records of the Fairmont District of the United Methodist Women and its predecessor, the Women's Society for Christian Service, a social service arm of the Methodist Church. In its early years, much of the group's activities focused on the Scott's Run Settlement House in Osage, WV. Included are minutes and the subject files of officers, the latter dating mostly from the 1970's.
