Printed form completed in manuscript. The top half of the form is a prospectus for Jared Sparks's Life and Writings of Washingotn, with Historical Notes, Illustrations, Engravings, &c. It features a wood engraving of the "Evacuation of Boston, from a Revolutionary medal." The bottom of the form certifies that Oliver B. Dorance - a lawyer and freemason from Portland, Maine - has paid 5 dollars for volumes two and three of Sparks's book. The receipt is signed by Benjamin R. Downes on behalf of the publisher.

Broadside. Printed document in French and English. "By His Excellency George Washington, Esquire, Commander in Chief of the Army of the United Colonies of North America." Gives reasons and accounts of his armies presence in Canada under command of General Schuyler, "not to plunder, but to protect you; to animate, and bring forth into Action those Sentiments of Freedom you have disclosed..."

Document, An artist's proposal for subscription and receipt for the engraving America, 1778 Box 6, Folder 1778.04.16

This broadside was used as an advertisement to help fund engravings of Robert Edge Pine's painting that celebrated the American cause. It is filled out by Pine in manuscript on behalf of George William Fairfax who bought and sponsored five prints. Paid by George William Fairfax and signed by Robert Edge Pine

The bulk of this collection consists of documents relating to commissary stores, provisions, and supplies handled by Major P. M. Slaughter, Brigade Commissary, Mahone's Brigade. Other documents include correspondence that relates to the enlistment of Shelton Watts of Amherst County, Virginia in Thomas Kirkpatrick's Battery, and two legal broadsides from the District Court of Confederate States concerning sequestration of property of "alien enemies."

The Declaration of Independence engraving, 1833/1843 1 items

Stone, William James, 1798-1865

This collection consists of one engraving of the Declaration of Independence by William J. Stone. It dates from around the time of the Stone's second printing (circa 1833), and was one of his personal copies. Stone's engravings show both the text and the signatures in facsimile, which are very close in appearance to the original.

VMI Civil War admissions circular, 1861 1 items

The printed portion of the document outlines the proposed training regimen and lists estimated monthly expenses. This particular document was mailed to Christopher Damron, a lawyer in Allegheny County, Virginia, who had inquired about enrolling his sons (they did not enroll). A handwritten note from VMI's treasurer William S. Polk to Damron appears at the bottom of the document.
