Scrapbooks maintained by Charles Carpenter, Grafton, between 1939-1963. Subjects include descriptions of libraries, book and manuscript collections, museums, rare and unusual books, magazines, book reviews, newspapers, and advertisements for books. There are items as early as 1838, 1875, 1898, 1905, 1917, but the mass of the collection is in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. Recurrent topics include book auctions, book burnings, the dime novel, the Freedom Train, the Gutenberg Bible, Hyde Park Library, Incunabula, the Library of Congress, "London Times Notes on Sales," The Morgan Library, New York Times magazine and book review, New York Times columnists (Philip Brooks, Edward Larocque Tinker, and Herbert W. Horwill), and stamps. There are also letters concerning books from Charles Carpenter's son. For more detailed description, see inventory sheet.

These records show the dates of births, deaths, and marriages for members of the following families: Caldwell, Moore, Pearce, Edwards, Justice, Lytle, Wheeler, Anfiled, Marrs. The names found in each bible are indexed. Material covers the years 1760-1975.

An artificial collection of genealogical materials; ca. 1880 to 1993; many of which were probably collected by Dr. Earl Gregg Swem in connection with the publication of genealogical information in the "William and Mary Quarterly, 2nd Series". Includes correspondence, clippings, coats-of-arms, charts, and family histories. Most newspaper clippings are from "The Standard" in Richmond, Virginia from the early 1880's.

Ledger, 1838-1852 and financial records, 1828 to circa 1853 of the Graham family of Bath County, Virginia. The ledger contains entries concerning the threshing and delivery of wheat, oats, and rye. The inner leather cover of the ledger records deaths in the Graham family for the years 1837-1848. Family members listed include Christopher Graham, Jane Graham, A. Graham, and G. Graham. The collection also contains 51 other documents, mainly notes and receipts dealing with Thomas Graham. These documents, dating mainly from 1828 to 1853, deal with topics such as threshing wheat, dressing sheep skins, and making shoes. Other items of interest include a receipt for tickets sent to Richmond, a note including samples of sand paper, and the 1894 will of Elizabeth Graham. In her will, Elizabeth Graham bequeaths items to a number of her sons and daughters, including John Graham, Mary Bradshaw, Franklin P. Graham, Samantha Ann Hicklin, George Graham, David Graham, William Roft Graham, Elizabeth Hamilton, Archie Graham, and Charlie Henry Graham.

Gladden in Rockingham, California from Port Republic, Virginia; undated Heidelberg Picture Card of "The Boy Samuel;" 1902 religious leaflet; typed transcript of a letter to Sister Blanche from her brother in Clarksburg, West Virginia about the death of her mother (undated); genealogical information on Sarah and Philip Lindsey; page from family bible (very fragile) which includes the marriage of Adam R. Gladden and Catharin Pane Lindsey on December 19, 1819, the birth of Martha Ann Gladden in 1856 and the death of Sarah Elisabeth Gladden in 1845, the birth of "Sarah Lindsey, nee Gilmon was born in the year of our Lord December 3, 1787" and other entries and newspaper clippings of obituaries including A.P. Gladden of Mount Crawford, Virginia.
