Subjects of Julia Davis's correspondence and notes include a biographical sketch of E.H. McDonald, Miss Davis's grandfather; business letters; reminiscences of the Civil War; and memoirs of Colonel A.W. McDonald. Subjects of John W. Davis's correspondence include family matters, political and business matters, and information about his trips. Correspondents include John W. Davis, William L. Wilson, and Julia McDonald (probably Julia Davis's mother).

Notebooks of Lillian Mayfield Wright, Appalachian writer and poet from Tyler Co., WV. One of the notebooks is a typed manuscript of No Wind Blowing/The Old Stone House. And the other two are a scrapbook of clippings of her published poems and a loose-leaf notebook of typed poems and short stories. Daughter of J. Grant and Florence Carter Mayfield, she was a noted West Virginia writer of the inter-war era who also published under the surname of her first husband as Lillian Mayfield Roberts. She studied at New York University under the famous poet, Joyce Kilmer who later died as an American soldier in World War I.

Correspondence, manuscripts, notes and notebooks, diaries, press clippings, photographs, and printed material of a West Virginia essayist, short-story writer, poet and novelist, who won the first O. Henry Memorial Prize in 1919 for her short story, "England to America." The papers include correspondence from editors, publishers, agents and critics; readers' correspondence; family letters; manuscripts of short stories and other works; outlines, plots, and drafts; and diaries and notebooks primarily concerned with religious meditation, Christian mysticism, and Miss Montague's concept of human ennoblement through suffering. Correspondents include Bernard Baruch, Russell Doubleday, Howard M. Gore, M.A. DeWolfe Howe, Vachel Lindsay, Christopher Morley, Philip Van Doren Stern, Joseph P. Tumulty, and Woodrow Wilson.

M.K. Lowther (1869-1947) was a journalist and one of the first women newspaper editors in West Virginia. She was the author of the HISTORY OF RITCHIE COUNTY; BLENNERHASSETT ISLAND IN ROMANCE AND TRAGEDY; FRIENDSHIP HILL, HOME OF ALBERT GALLATIN; MARSHALL HALL AND OTHER POTOMAC POINTS IN STORY AND PICTURE; and MT. VERNON: ITS CHILDREN, ITS ROMANCES, ITS ALLIED FAMILIES AND MANSIONS. There are complete and incomplete typescripts, rough drafts, revisions, photographs and plates of her books. Also there are typescripts of news articles on Washington, D.C., the Potomac Valley, and Wood County. There are genealogical notebooks and correspondence and also correspondence to publishers concerning business arrangements. Autograph manuscript with signature at the end of a poem entitled "Logan Grazier". English was an opponent of Edgar Allen Poe and wrote in a style imitative of his immediate literary predecessors. This poem is his celebration of the simple, hardworking herdsmen of Logan County. The author hopes that he, the poem and its subject will be long remembered. Also there is a TLS from the author Davis Grubb (dated: 11 September 1954) requesting that he be excused from meeting a deadline on A Dream of Kings. Talks about how writers have a habit of avoiding what they should be doing.

Papers of the managing editor of the Parkersburg DAILY STATE JOURNAL, 1889-1895, editor of the WEST VIRGINIA SCHOOL JOURNAL, and member of the English faculty of West Virginia University, 1895-1925. The collection includes manuscripts of Barbe's published poetry and unpublished short stories, correspondence, notes, speeches, class lectures, illustrations for short stories drawn by John Rettig, a scrapbook of clippings of reviews and correspondence relating to Barbe's book, GOING TO COLLEGE, and memorabilia. The correspondence includes letters, in some cases accompanied by holograph verse, from Winston Churchill, Richard Harding Davis, Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, Hamlin Garland, R.W. Gilder, Edward E. Hale, William H.
