The collection contains two letters: one letter from Anson Du Puy Van Buren to Miss Ada D. Clark, dated August 26, 1863 and another letter from the National Society of Autograph Collectors to Mr. Forest Sweet, dated March 20, 1948. The earlier letter includes a description of Sojourner Truth by Van Buren and references Nathaniel Hawthorne. The second letter documents the provenance of this earlier letter. The collection also contains one newspaper clipping from The Battle Creek Enquirer regarding Sojourner Truth, dated September 24, 1997.

The Asa Moore Janney Forest Mills ledgers contains three ledgers belonging to Asa Moore Janney, a Quaker who owned Forest Mills located in Loudoun Country, Virginia. The ledgers contain accounts of flour and other commodities Janney provided to families including African Americans as well as volunteers in the Confederate army. The ledgers tracked daily business sales and transactions along with labor expenses for the mill operation.

Five prints from various publications depicting the Battles of Williamsburg and surrounding areas including Yorktown and Big Bethel during the Peninsula Campaign conducted by the Union Army and lead by General George B. McClellan in 1862. The prints are drawings showing Union and Confederate soldiers at battle, using barns as hospitals, and marching as they advance toward Richmond.

A hand-colored mammoth plate portrait of Charles Minnigerod, 1814-1894, rector of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Richmond, Virginia during the American Civil War. The image was photographed by the Anderson Art Palace, operated by photographer David H. Anderson, 1827-1905. The photograph is undated, but was taken during the operation of the Anderson Art Palace in Richmond, Virginia, 1865-1879.

Collection contains materials documenting the Corr-Hogge family including H.L. Corr, Levi Pace Corr, Harry and Jean Corr among others. Collection includes correspondence, ledgers and journals dating from the 19th century. Topics covered include World Warr II.

The collection contains letters received by Colonel Henry Goddard Thomas, the commander of the U.S. Colored Infantry during the Civil War. The letters were sent to Thomas from two individuals, German immigrants Lewis C. Henser and Rudolph Tensler (Teusler). In his two letters, Hensler outlined news of funding and his town of residence. In his single letter to Thomas, Tensler spoke mostly of family affairs. The letters contain content pertaining to funding, personal and family life, and news of the war.

The John Newton Bell papers includes personal and professional correspondence from relatives, business associates and religious figures throughout Virginia and the greater Appalachia. Letters document subject areas including the Civil War, the hospitalization of women in mental health facilities, agricultural issues, and religious matters related to the Presbyterian Church.

Lizzie Earle Cary Daniel (1848-1915) kept this journal from 1875-1883. She titled it "A Life and its Gleanings." The contents include handwritten poetry, philosophical musings, and newspaper clippings. Many clippings are simply layered between the pages by Daniel. The journal is accompanied by a 1916 "Interrogatory for Listing by Taxpayer and Commissioner of Revenue Tangible and Intangible Personal Property, and Money" form.

Collection contains family letters and other family accounts from Leila James Mosby and her husband Charles W. Russell. Russell was an officer during the American Civil War for the Confederate Army and an author as well as diplomat to Persia (modern day Iran). Mosby was the sister of Confederate officer John S. Mosby.

The Randolph Family Papers contains correspondence and financial documents relating to Isham Randolph (1771-1844), first cousin of Thomas Jefferson, David Coupland Randolph (1804-1886), son of Isham Randolph, Isham Randolph Page (1834-1923), nephew of Isham Randolph and Judith Randolph Swann (Circa 1815-1870), sister of Isham Randolph. Materials document daily financial activities such as the hiring and buying of enslaved people, and Isham Randolph's role as an officer at the James River & Kanawha Company. Correspondence documents the family's relationship with enslaved people and their participation in the American Civil War (1861-1865). The letters also describe the Civil War in Richmond from the battlefield and the home front. Materials also describe the role of enslaved people in the post Civil War period and records the names and emancipation of those enslaved by the Randolphs.
