This collection contains: a letter advertising a medication, on the other side of which is a note about the sale of the Galbraith Farm and a note about a trial; a letter from the Rockbridge Historical Society concerning a landmark next to the Stonewall Jackson Farm; a copy of an address delivered before the Rockbridge Historical Society by Colonel William Couper about the Virginia Military Institute; a memorande concerning a farm owned and operated by Major T.J. "Stonewall" Jackson; maps of different parts of Rockbridge County; a memo by Winifred Hadsel on the location of the Stonewall Jackson Farm; photographs taken at and near the Stonewall Jackson Farm; and a paper on Short Hill Farm.

The Samuel Crews Sharecropper Contract is a manuscript agreement that outlines the terms in which Samuel Crews can farm, but not own, lands belonging to S. and R. Dodd in Halifax County, Virginia, for the year 1877.

This collection contains a household and farming ledger owned by a Shropshire, England family, dating 1832-1867. Two articles and a letter report the discovery of coal in Shropshire. The ledger also contains financial records, notes on wine making and farming, instructions for care of cattle and pest control, and various receipes and remedies.

Thomas Hill Bernard Ledger 0.2 Cubic Feet 1 box

Bernard, Thomas Hill, 1824-1905
This collection contains the ledger dated 1853-1881 of Thomas Hill Bernard (1824-1905), an enslaver and manager of Big Meadows Plantation in Franklin County, Virginia. This ledger is also signed by his daughter Mary E. Bernard (1874-1952). The ledger lists the names, occupations, ages, and "value" of of five enslaved people: Terry, [Tom?], [Amistead?], James, and [Banks?] The majority of the ledger includes the farming activities of the farm and the daily activities of Bernard and his family, mostly from the 1870s. The ledger also contains a receipt of taxes owed to the Sheriff of Franklin County in 1853 for the plantation signed by Judith Bernard.
