Description:
The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) houses one of the largest and most significant collections of rare and unique materials of any educational institution of comparable size in the United States. Focused on Virginia history but with nationally and internationally important collections, the Manuscripts Collection includes letters, diaries, journals, scrapbooks, business records, organizational minutes, and other items that provide evidence of events great and small and the daily lives of Americans of all backgrounds. The Rare Books Collection, with volumes dating from the 15th century to the present, is strong in dogs, Virginia-related items, early Virginia family libraries, gardening and natural history, religion, book arts, printing history, travel, science, and medicine. The University Archives documents the history of William & Mary from 1693 to the present, including a wide range of materials from administrative records, student organization records, and alumni papers to photographs, audio-visual materials, and artifacts.

Blaxploitation Cinema Pressbooks and Posters, 1968/1976

The collection contains pressbooks and posters of over 40 blaxploitation films. The pressbooks contain articles about the film, the stars and the filmmakers, as well as samples of proposed publicity campaigns, plot synopses, credits and other information. Many of the posters were used to advertise the films in local theaters, some doctored to suit white audiences while others have directions that specified "for black audiences only." Some of the movies include Shaft's Big Score, Blacula, Hammer, Cleopatra Jones, and Super Fly T.N.T. The Richard E. Norman film production collection contains film promotional flyers and brochures produced by Richard E. Norman through Norman Studios from 1919- 1940. Norman became a widely recognized film maker who produced "race" films. These were films that contained all African American casts and targeted an African American audience. Posters include those for films The Crimson Skull (1922) by Richard Edward Norman and The Flying Ace (1926) by Lawrence Criner.

Ya-Dig, Sho-Nuff, By Any Means Necessary WGS East, Incorporated, number 39658. The film was ultimately released in 1998 and starred Larry Fishburne, Giancarlo Esposito, and Tisha Campbell- Martin. It is about members Greek social organizations clashing with other students on campus during Home Coming Weekend at a historically black institution. Lee based much of the material on his experiences at Morehouse College, Spelman College, Morris Brown College, and Clark Atlanta University.
