Culpeper County (Va.) Marriage Register (Colored), 1866, is a volume that contains the same kinds of information as that found in a cohabitation register and a register of children of parents who had ceased to cohabit. The volume is divided into three slightly different sections with an index at the beginning that gives the page and line number for each indexed individual. It is also commonly called the Culpeper County (Va.) Cohabitation Register.

Also commonly called Culpeper County (Va.) Cohabitation Register. This one page register lists the name of the child, age, place of birth, residence, last owner, residence of the last owner, residence of father, his age and last owner, residence of last owner of father, name of mother, her age, her residence if alive or noted if dead, last owner of mother, residence of last owner of mother, and the signature of the father.

Culpeper County (Va.) Register of Colored Persons of Culpeper County, State of Virginia, cohabiting together as Husband and Wife on 27th February 1866. Also commonly called Culpeper County (Va.) Cohabitation Register. This register records on two pages the name of the husband, his age, place of birth, residence, occupation, last owner, last owner's residence, name of the wife, her age, place of birth, residence, last owner, last owner's residence, name of children with the ages of each, and the date of commencement of cohabitation. Many of the persons listed under the column of father's name are actually the mothers of the children.

Abstract Or Scope

Culpeper County (Va.) Register of Marriages (Colored) Under Act of Assembly of Virginia, February 27th, 1866, is also known as the Culpeper County (Va.) Cohabitation Register. It consists of 5 pages of marriages of former slaves recorded on forms usually used to record regular marriages. Information recorded includes date and place of marriage (all given as February 27, 1866), town or county, full name of husband and wife, age and condition before marriage (single or widowed), places of birth of husband and wife, places of residence, names of parents, occupation of husband, and name of person performing marriage ceremony (all given as "Law of VA"). Unlike other cohabitation registers, no information is recorded about previous owners. There is no index.
