Description:
The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) houses one of the largest and most significant collections of rare and unique materials of any educational institution of comparable size in the United States. Focused on Virginia history but with nationally and internationally important collections, the Manuscripts Collection includes letters, diaries, journals, scrapbooks, business records, organizational minutes, and other items that provide evidence of events great and small and the daily lives of Americans of all backgrounds. The Rare Books Collection, with volumes dating from the 15th century to the present, is strong in dogs, Virginia-related items, early Virginia family libraries, gardening and natural history, religion, book arts, printing history, travel, science, and medicine. The University Archives documents the history of William & Mary from 1693 to the present, including a wide range of materials from administrative records, student organization records, and alumni papers to photographs, audio-visual materials, and artifacts.

Account book, 1858-1874, Hillsboro and Concord, New Hampshire, listing dollar amounts earned for a variety of different services like taking oxen to pasture, bushels of wheat gathered, horse shoeing, removing wood tree stumps, and so on. Other entries list items purchased, including pork, nails, beef, pewter plates, potatoes, sugar, and beans. Includes a few loose notes and receipts, e.g. from J.C. Moss. Most of the addresses listed in the book are in Virginia (Richmond, Warsaw, Hague, Gloucester, Alexandria). Baltimore, Maryland is also mentioned.Name and address written in pencil inside the front cover is Freddie Gurdy (?), 428 N. Carleton St., Baltimore Md.

In 1921, it was named "Overland and Willys Knight Automobiles Mianus Engines, " but had other names through the years. The family also sold seafood products. Charles Robert Diggs worked in various automotive and machine shops in the area after 1920's.

This collection contains nine volumes of Ernest Stuart Elsea's business records dating from 1944 to 1968. The ledgers detail the accounts for Elsea's business which operated under the following names: Elsea's Esso Station, Stuart's Service Station, Stuart's Esso Station, and Elsea's Esso Garage. Elsea's station sold gasoline, auto supplies, and basic groceries. The station also provided an automobile repair service.
