Kemp studied a number of aspects of the history of concrete and cement alongside other scholars, and eventually wrote an article, "Design & Construction Documentation for Early Concrete Structures." The box includes his research materials and collaborations with others, including his correspondence, scholarly journal articles, magazine excerpts, a photographic print, pamphlets, technical bulletins, a booklet, and handwritten notes. The box also includes facsimile journal articles. Subjects include ancient concrete structures (especially ancient Roman mortar and concrete), metal reinforcements for concrete, and the history of cement, materials used in building bridges, the American Concrete Institute, and scholar L.G. Mensch. Highlights include correspondence investigating structural damage to West Virginia University's Stewart Hall.
