Kemp applied for National Science Foundation research grants for two projects: the project "Marc Seguin and the Origins of the Modern Long-Span Suspension Bridge" and "History of the Suspension Bridge, 1801-1870." Kemp also researched suspension bridges in preparation for articles and lectures such as "History of the Modern Suspension Bridge: The European Experience" and "Suspenseful Adventures: Building Bridges of the Niagara," both lectures for the National Museum of American History. The box includes the NSF grant applications, essay drafts, lecture notes, event programs, handwritten notes and facsimile scholarly journal articles. Subjects include suspension bridges in Europe and the United States, suspension bridge engineers, the development of the suspension bridge structure, and the Niagara Bridge over the Niagara Falls.
