Wishes to acquaint him with his activities of the past summer during which he prevented a "collision" with Great Britain and satyed civil unrest in the South; has been twice pardoned and because of his ancestors, is very concerned about the welfare of the United States; hopes to persuade the Democratic electoral colleges [to make the vote in the electoral college unanimous for Grant]. 2 pp. Cy of ALS.
