Snow at Bruton Parish Church Printing Block, 1933

Scope and content:

Printing block with a metal plate. The metal plate features a relief of Bruton Parish church and snowflakes falling all around it. Men and women in eighteenth century clothing walk along the snow laden sidewalk (the women are holding parasols). Two boys are depicted on the snow covered street. One boy in a coat, hat, pants, and boots runs down the street while pulling another boy (wearing a hat, coat, pants, mittens, and scarf) on a sled. The printing block was made by Charles W. Smith possibly to be used in the 1933 Colonial Echo. The printing block is 5.5in. (width) x 7.125in. (length) and is in good condition. The back has a 5.5in. brown stain across the top as well as a 2in. black stain coming from the right side. it also has a 1.5in. crack in the middle and three splits running the length of the block. The bottom edge has a 0.25in. crack in the center with a black stain surrounding it, a black stain about the width of the block bleeding in from the front metal piece, 18 holes going across, and three splits running parallel to the splits across the back. The top edge features a 0.5in. crack in the center with a black stain surrounding it. It also has seven holes going across and three splits that run parallel to the splits on the back of the block.
