A Gentleman Courts a Lady Printing Block

Printing block with a metal plate. The metal plate features a relief of an eighteenth century house and a full moon in the background. The foreground features a fence and a man in eighteenth century clothes holding the hand of a woman, in eighteenth century clothes holding a fan, with his head bowed over the woman's hand. "221" is written and underlined in pencil on the right edge of the block. The printing block was made by Charles W. Smith possibly to be used in the 1933 Colonial Echo. The printing block is 5.5in. (width) x 7.125in. (length) and is in good condition. The front has metal chipping around the nails that hold the metal plate to the wood. The back has three splits along the length of the printing block. It also has a smattering of green stains, a 7in. white tissue substance near the right edge, a 3.75in. pencil mark near the top and a 2.5in. pencil mark near the bottom. The bottom edge has a 5.25 in. brown stain, a 0.5in. split and a 0.75 in. split near the right edge parallel to the split on the back of the block. The top edge has 16 small holes, a 0.125 in. crack near the left edge, a 0.5in. crack in the center and three 0.75in. splits parallel to the splits on the back. Gift of Nancy Peters. UA 2013.209.05
