"A Fast-Riding Courier Spreads the News of Yorktown" Printing Block

Printing block with a metal plate. The metal plate features a relief of a row of eighteenth century shops and/or houses in Williamsburg. There are men and women in eighteenth century clothing walking and standing in front of the houses/shops. A courier on horseback is depicted riding through the town of Williamsburg with his hand up. One male figure standing in front of the houses/shops is depicted waving to the courier. The printing block has a 3.5in. phrase starting with a "B" written in pencil on the back and "119" written and underlined in pencil on the right edge. This printing block was made for a print in the 1933 Colonial Echo by Charles W. Smith. The printing block is 5.5in. (width) x 7.125in. (length). The printing block is in good condition. The printing block has a 0.75in. split and a white stain in the shape of a "p" on the back. There is also a 0.875in. split and some chipping on the bottom edge of the printing block. The top edge of the printing block has a 0.375in. and a 0.25 in. crack along with some small white stains. Gift of Nancy Peters. UA 2013.209.02
