Mentions the tremendous noise of the Yankee cannons; the men are panting for an encounter with the Yankees and they hope to make "old York a spot more memorable for Yankee defeat than it has been for Cornwallis; with God protecting them [Confederates] they cannot possibly loose; notes that crops are poor; mentions the loss of Negroes due to Yankee liberation; his neighbor, Dr. Byrd, wants to be put in the Yankee controlled Fort Lafayette until the end of the war so he can be left in peace.
