Has received two letters, glad to hear Jerdone's son has returned to studies; glad to hear of their relations in Jedburgh, Scotland and will try to write soon; Mr. Holt is making an effort to pay off his debts and has sold his plantation; doesn't know how to advise Jerdone on these business matters; have had a streak of bad luck including destruction of corn; general sickness of the family causing the death of one enslaved woman and the explosion of the "old works about the forge;" still has not found a pair of carriage horses; other family news.
