Pocket Book and Silver Cartouche

Scope and content:

This box houses a leather pocket book/ billfold which belonged to Edward L. Swem (1838- 1918) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Swem was a Union soldier in the Civil War who later operated his own photography studio in Belle Plaine, Iowa and Cedar Rapids. Edward L. Swem was the father of Earl Gregg Swem. Cartouche accompanies leather billfold and has "Swem" etched in the center. For preservation purposes it is detached from the leather billfold and housed in the velvet pocket that came with it. Accession 2016.032.
