Most of this box contains the papers of John, 2nd Earl of Dunmore (1685-1752) who served as Lieut. General under John, Earl of Stair, Commander in Chief of British forces in Flanders. Instructions to the 2nd Earl from William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, Philip Stanhope, 2nd Earl of Harrington, and Henry Pelham concerning the engagement at Fontenoy, the removal of British troops to put down the Scottish Rebellion, and the fall of Brussels in 1746. After the Scottish Rebellion, William Murray, 3rd Earl, was taken prisoner, tried for treason, acquitted, though sentenced to live the rest of his life in London.
