Travel Diary written by Meta J. Chapman. Diary entries from 1930 September 6-15. Travel started in Erie Pennsylvania, and headed south to South Hill, Virginia where Robert Chapman grew up. Stops included: State College, Pennsylvania, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, Lexington (Virginia Military Institute), Virginia, Farmville, Virginia, Appomattox, Virginia, South Hill, Virginia, Norfolk, Virginia, Virginia Beach, Virginia, Richmond, Virginia, Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Washington, DC. She goes into detail about the sites, the people (both Black and white) and the history. Many comments about the Black people are derogatory. Mary Chapman also discusses the drought of 1930, and the differences in drought conditions between regions through Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. Travel diary contains an attached road map of the United States. 35 black and white photos accompany the diary, showing landmark buildings, historic civil war sites, landscapes from the road, and the Chapman Family.
