"The Amherst Progress" was described by Strode as a "democratic, country, weekly newspaper" with a circulation of between seven and eight hundred subscribers in 1914. The paper was established in 1904 by Stickley Tucker (1879-1912) the editor–in-chief and business manager, and was published until his ill health and death.
