Scope and content:

The collection of Surgeon James P. Hutchinson World War I Papers contains correspondence, payment vouchers (some with incidental telegraph transcriptions) and receipts. There are approximately 65 items from 1915-1916, pertaining to Dr. Hutchinson's service with the American Ambulance Hospital of Paris, France. Hopital Benevole No. 2 bis, in the Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine.

Correspondence includes a letter from "Administration generale de L'Assistance publique a Paris" on the soldiers' conditions and two letters from Barton Morrison, cashier of the American Ambulance Hospital of Paris concerning cash balances, vouchers, and cash envelopes. Receipts include information on surgical instruments.

This collection was a purchase from Ian Brabner Rare Americana to the Small Special Collections Library at the University of Virginia Library on 9 April, 2015.

Biographical / historical:

Dr. James Hutchinson was a son of Philadelphia physician James Howell Hutchinson (1834-1889) Per Transactions of the American Surgical Association Vol. 38 p 23: "Dr. James P. Hutchinson, U.S. Army, commissioned Major July, 1917. Served as Volunteer Surgeon with French at American Ambulance, Paris 1915, 1916, and 1917. Later Chief Surgeon and Commanding Officer to [American Red Cross] Military Hospital No. 1 [at Neuilly, France]; Promoted to Lt. Colonel to Colonel.
