Stereoscopic view of the Mansion taken from the southeast lawn, photograph by William England, 1859. England photographed sites of North America for the London Stereocopic Company for a series of stereographs on American views. The view includes three figures - an African-American male standing with his foot resting on a large stone, next to him a woman sits on the ground and a white male stands in the distance with the south facade of the Mansion in the background. This trio of models appear in several other views taken by England. Mounted on cream board. The front of the card mount features a printed caption, 'No. 204.-The Home of Washington, Mount Vernon.' The reverse of the card bears a patriotic graphic of an eagle, shield, arrows and a banner reading United States of America. The caption describes in brief the history of the Mansion, the interiors, and the setting of the estate.
