Washington writes, "A desire to know that Mount Vernon is placed beyond the chances and changes of Family fortune, in hands where it will be permanently preserved and taken care of, and never applied to any unworthy purpose, is the principal indeed I may say the only inducement I have to place it in the possession of the United States."
