Letter, to James McAlpin, 1799
- Containers:
- Box 15, Folder 1799.02.10
- Scope and content:
-
In a former letter Washington had ordered a uniform to be made as instructed by Secretary of War to be ready by Feb. 22 -- here he suggests sending it by way of Judge Bushrod Washington, who should be leaving Philadelphia for Mount Vernon shortly -- Washington wants the goods packed in a custom-built portmanteau of stiff thick leather, 2 feet long and 2 ft. 9 in round with a flap for brushes, blacking, and so on, with an iron bar running through staples, and a good lock -- he says an able craftsman would have no trouble building one from that description.
