Biographical / historical:

Joseph W. Kovac enlisted in the United States Navy in 1950 and served during the Korean War aboard the destroyer USS Allen M. Sumner (DD 692). The ship was active in Pusan, Korea, where the mission was to prevent the progress of enemy supply trains. Kovac left the Navy in 1954 and returned to civilian life.
