Howard Dunfee was drafted in 1943 into the United States Army and was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division. He landed in Normandy on three days after D-Day and served as a front line infantryman, machine gun bearer, and gunner until he was seriously wounded near Aachen, Germany. After receiving treatment in several hospitals, Dunfee returned to the United States and was discharged in April 1945.
