Wayland taught at several institutions in Virginia, including the University of Virginia and Madison College (now known as James Madison University), until his retirement in 1931. Following retirement he did extensive research and writing on the history, places and people of the Shenandoah Valley. During his life he authored 40 books and is one of the leading historians of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. He was born on January 1, 1850 at his family home, known as \"Bid-a-Wee,\" located on Peyton Street in the City of Winchester to Alexander G. Affleck and Ann E. Hoover. He worked for many years in the business of selling agricultural tools and machinery with his brother Scott A. Affleck. He married Rosa Kerfoot on December 26, 1883. The couple had five children. Wayland taught at several institutions in Virginia, including the University of Virginia and Madison College (now known as James Madison University), until his retirement in 1931. Following retirement he did extensive research and writing on the history, places and people of the Shenandoah Valley. During his life he authored 40 books and is one of the leading historians of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
