The group remained responsible for overseeing both resources until 2015 when they assumed a more traditional advisory role after the Archivist position was restored.","This collection was originally stored in various ways. Parts were retained by the library in the Shenandoah Room Collection while other items originated from personal collections or were acquired directly from organizations. All have been processed together according to their association with the Advisory Committee in appropriate document and large scale boxes. Items too large for document storage have been placed in oversize folders in the archives map case.","This collection consists of approximately 10 linear feet of materials. This includes approximately 213 folders containing an array of local history publications, documents, photographs, and research materials. There are also 17 CDs with digital materials and a single book. They are stored in 9 boxes and one oversize folder. The collection is organized into the following four series:","Series 1, Publications, 1717-2016 includes a wide array of publications. Some of these relate to the history of local groups, businesses, organizations, individuals, and sites. Others are various scientific publications related to local geography, geology, natural features, and buildings.","Series 2, Photographs and Documents, 1792-2016 includes historic photographs and documents, including many copies and transcriptions.","Series 3, Research, 1772-2017 includes information obtained during various research projects conducted by the library, members of the advisory committee, or their associates.","Series 4, Objects, 1829-2013 includes 17 CDs with various audio recordings, scans of objects, and other digital materials. He is an environmentalist and a journalist focusing on conservation and local Roanoke issues. He received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in Wildlife Management in 1955 and a Master's and Doctorate of Philosophy degrees from the Department of Resource Management at Michigan State University in 1969.","After graduating from the University of Michigan, Cutler worked as an instruction book writer for Argus Cameras in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In 1956, he moved to Arizona where he edited the Winslow Mail, a weekly newspaper. In 1957, he accepted the post of executive secretary of Wildlife Conservation Incorporated in Boston and in 1958 he was hired by the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries to be associate editor of Virginia Wildlife, the Virginia Game Department's magazine. In 1961, Cutler was promoted to Chief, Education Division, Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries. Cutler was then in Washington D.C. serving as editor of publications of the National Wildlife Federation (1962-1965) and then as assistant executive director of The Wilderness Society (1965-1969).","In 1969, Cutler returned to Michigan to study for his doctorate at Michigan State University and to work as a Graduate Research Assistant in MSU's Department of Resource Development. With his degree, he became assistant professor of resource development and the state's extension specialist in natural resources policy, a post which he held from 1972-1977. In 1977 he was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to serve as assistant secretary of agriculture for conservation, research, and education. From 1977 to 1980 he provided policy direction to the U.S. Forest Service, the Soil Conservation Service, and USDA's research, extension, and library agencies. He was also senior vice president of the National Audubon Society (1980-1983), and executive director of Population-Environment Balance (1983-1987). From 1987-1990 he was the president and CEO of Defenders of Wildlife, an organization based in Washington, DC devoted to protecting animals and their habitats in the United States.","M. Rupert Cutler moved to Roanoke, Virginia in January 1991. From 1991 to February of 1997, he was the executive director of Virginia's Explore Park, a 1,000-acre outdoor living history museum and environmental education center on the Roanoke River in Roanoke and Bedford counties. In March of 1997, M. Rupert Cutler became the founding executive director of the Western Virginia Land Trust, a new, private, nonprofit association created to help preserve the natural, scenic, and cultural heritage of western Virginia on private land, using conservation easements. Between 2004-2009, he sat on the board of the Western Virginia Water Authority, which was created in 2004 to provide water and waste water treatment to the City of Roanoke and Roanoke County.","From 2002-2010, Cutler acted as a Trustee for the Virginia Outdoors Foundation, a semi-governmental organization created in 1966 to promote the use and preservation of Virginia's public lands. For part of this time he was also serving as President of the Roanoke chapter of the Kiwanis Club (2002-2003), of which he is a long-standing member. From 2006-2009 he also served as chair of the Steering Committee of the Nonprofit Resource Center of Western Virginia, which supports the work of regional nonprofits. He has also served on the boards of Opera Roanoke, the Harrison Museum of African-American Culture, Valley Beautiful, the Roanoke Urban Forestry Council, Historic Greenfield, and has worked on a number of committees to preserve and improve Roanoke and the environment.","The guide to the M. Harrison, the Virginia Opera Association was launched with two productions at the Norfolk Center Theater. In 1975, Peter Mark signed on as conductor for the Virginia Opera, a position he held for 35 years. His wife, the Scottish-American composer Thea Musgrave, has composed many of her works for the Virginia Opera. In 1977, the Virginia Opera began performances in Richmond with the encouragement of then-Governor Mills Godwin and Mrs. T. Fleetwood (Anna) Garner who helped form the Richmond Friends of the Opera. By 1983, the Richmond and Central Virginia Board of Virginia Opera was formed and a Richmond office was opened. In November 1992, the Virginia Opera presented its first main stage performance at the Center for the Arts at George Mason University in Fairfax. Today the Opera has an operating budget of $6 million and performs 36 main stage performances yearly in Norfolk, Richmond and Fairfax. In addition, the Virginia Opera reaches more than 200,000 students and community members yearly through its Education and Community Outreach Programs.","Venues","The Norfolk Center Theater began as a concrete-block structure near the Chrysler museum that originally served as a USO for armed forces personnel during World War II. The Norfolk Center Theater was renovated in 1993 and became the Edythe C. and Stanley L. Harrison Opera House, dedicated to the Virginia Opera's founder and her husband. The Harrison Opera House has 1,632 seats. \nThe Virginia Opera also plays at two other major venues in Virginia: the historical Landmark Theater in Richmond and the George Mason University Center for the Arts. The Landmark Theater, formerly known as the Mosque, was the Acca Temple Shrine in 1926 until it was bought by the City of Richmond in the 1940s. He graduated from Maury High School, and later received his Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Princeton and his M.D. from John's Hopkins University. He specialized in obstetrics and gynecology and completed his residency training at Johns Hopkins as well. Andrews then began a successful OB/GYN private practice in Norfolk in 1950. Additionally, Dr. Andrews taught Obstetrics and Gynecology at Johns Hopkins University and later at Eastern Virginia Medical School.","Andrews' community service began during the 1950's with service on the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce and the Health Welfare and Recreation Planning Council. While serving as president of the Norfolk County Medical Society, Andrews appointed a bipartisan committee to study the need for a medical school in the area. The study was able to convince the Virginia General Assembly of the need for a new medical school. In 1964 the Eastern Virginia Medical Center authority was formed with the charge of developing the new medical school. Andrews served as the chairman of the authority from 1964-1970. Under his leadership a medical center complex was built in an area that has once been slums. The medical complex now consists of Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS), Norfolk General Hospital, Medical Tower, Public Health Department, Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters and Tidewater Rehabilitation Institute. In addition, as chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at EVMS Andrews was instrumental in bringing the team of Drs. Howard and Georgeanna Jones to Norfolk. The Drs. Jones specialized in treating infertility problems. In 1981 they brought notoriety to Norfolk with the role they played in the first successful birth, in the United States, of a baby conceived by in-vitro fertilization. With the success of the in-vitro fertilization program the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine was founded in 1983.","Andrews also served on the Norfolk City Council from 1974 to 2000 and as the city's mayor from 1992 to 1994.
