The purpose of the Association was to purchase Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, in order to restore the property and open the grounds to visitors and admirers who desired to see Washington's house and tomb. Ann Pamela Cunningham became interested in the preservation of Mount Vernon when her mother, traveling down the Potomac River in 1853, saw the house in its neglected and dilapidated state and wrote to her daughter of its condition. Both women thought it shameful to allow the first President's home to fall into ruin. A determined Ann Pamela Cunningham assembled twenty-two women of like mind together to raise money to purchase the property, pay off all debt, and return the gardens and grounds to the condition in which they were left by Washington himself. John Augustine Washington III, George Washington's great-grandnephew and the owner of Mount Vernon at the time, delayed several years in selling the home to the Ladies' Association. He preferred a sale to the State of Virginia or the federal government, both of which declined purchase. In 1858 he finally agreed to sell Mount Vernon to Ann Pamela Cunningham and the MVLA for $200,000.","The MVLA is the owner and executive board of Mount Vernon. Membership is made up of one Regent and 20-30 Vice Regents, each from a different state. All MVLA members assemble twice a year in April and October for Council, where they hear motions and reports concerning projects or issues at the estate. The Vice Regents also divide into committees focused on different functions and operations, and rotate members every few years. Today the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association is remembered as the first organization dedicated to historic preservation in the United States, and as innovators in the field of preservation. The Association remains loyal to its original goals, the restoration and care of Mount Vernon, and educating people all over the world about George Washington's life and legacy. Mount Vernon is open to visitors 365 days a year. Project records, 1980 - 2013, undated","Born November 27, 1952, in Geneva, Switzerland, Diane Elliott Gayer is an architect, environmentally conscious designer, teacher, artist, and writer who has mostly practiced in the United States. From 1976 to 1979 Gayer attended a Masters in Architecture Program at the University of Colorado, Denver. There, she completed a thesis project proposing a mixed-use hospital expansion for the National Jewish Hospital-University of Colorado Medical Center complex. After graduating, she took a job at Marvin E. Knedler \u0026 Associates, and her work there led to other opportunities at the firms Duff, Reck, and Lehman Architects, and later at Michael Gaviglio \u0026 Associates. In 1983, she and her husband/business partner Geoff Kampe established their own practice, Artemis Designs, Inc., where they worked as a team to design the Left Bank Townhouses in Lakewood, Colorado, an infill project on reclaimed land. While still living in Colorado, she developed and taught teacher training programs in environmental education and served as architect in residence for the Colorado Arts Council and environmental design consultant for the Gifted and Talented Program of the Jefferson County School District. In 1988, Gayer relocated to Vermont to work as an associate architect at the University of Vermont.","Over the years, she has taught at Norwich University, the University of Vermont (UVM), and at the Yestermorrow Design/Build School in Waitsfield, Vermont. She also worked as architect, planner, and environmental designer at Diane Elliott Gayer Associates in Hinesburg, Vermont. From 1991-1997, Gayer served on the advisory board of the Vermont Design Institute (VDI), a non-profit design and community development collaborative based in Burlington, Vermont, that had grown out of an outreach effort of the Vermont Council on the Arts. She served as an apprentice to famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright from 1948 to 1949 as part of the Taliesin Fellowship in Spring Green, Wisconsin and Scottsdale, Arizona. And she did her graduate work at Harvard University's School of Design from 1949 to 1950.","Gottlieb began her career working as a designer for Warren Callister in San Francisco. Her first solo project was the design of the Val Goeschen house, a one-room unit with 576 square feet, in Inverness, CA. She went on to design other residences in Marin County as part of the design team Duncombe-Davidson based in Sausalito, CA. This partnership spanned the years 1951 to 1956. Gabbin taught at Roosevelt University, Chicago State University, and Lincoln University before she was hired at James Madison University in 1985 as a Commonwealth Visiting Professor. She became the director of the Honors Program (now the Honors College) in 1986, where she served for 19 years and founded many programs that define the Honors College today.","In 1994, she organized the first Furious Flower Poetry Conference, which she held at JMU and in honor of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Gwendolyn Brooks. The event was considered historic and likely the largest gathering of African American poets and literature scholars to that date. In Feburary 2017, Cardinal House experienced a flood as a result of plumbing issues. Materials in this collection were affected and may exhibit water damage. Processors used labels as direction for series arrangement, and focused on discards of duplicates and assessing water-damage materials. Afterwards, materials were moved to hollingers and additional accruals were integrated into the existing arrangement.","Duplicate newspapers, newsletters, brochures, articles, etc. were discarded.
